Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days #1) by Susan Ee – 4 stars
This is not your typical angel book filled with boyish heart-throbs. No. This is a book about warriors. About survival. This is a new take on angel books, and I’m so happy I started digging in!
Penryn and Raffe, a human and an angel, are thrown together in a twist of fate. It’s the end of the world. The apocalypse, and the angels have come to destroy them all. Penryn is used to taking care of her mentally-ill mother and her crippled sister, until they all get separated. Her little sister was taken by an angel while her mother ran for her life. Her only option is to save her sister from whatever the angels could want with her.
Angelfall is a unique read and I’m so happy I dug into these books. They’ve been sitting on my shelves for a while and I’m a big upset with myself for not reading this sooner. I found myself cheering on the main character and twitching with nervous excitement. The imagery is fantastic. The characters are unique and strong. This book is twisted. There are gruesome scenes, but it’s well worth the read.
“Oh, please. Your giant head is getting too big for this forest. Pretty soon, you’re going to get stuck trying to walk between two tress. And then, I’ll have to rescue you.” I give him a weary look. “Again.”
“My friends call me Wrath,” says Raffe. “My enemies call me Please Have Mercy. What’s your name, soldier boy?”
“Sometimes, as we’re stumbling along in the dark, we hit something good.”
It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.
Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.
Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.
Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.
